Natural Characteristics of Japanese Pottery

Your piece arrived and something about it looks different from the product photo, or different from the piece you saw last time. Before you assume anything is wrong, it's worth knowing that Japanese ceramics carry a set of traits that are built into how they're made — not flaws in how they were made.
Why no two pieces are identical
Most of what you're holding was shaped, glazed, and fired by hand, in small batches, in kilns that were never designed to produce identical twins. Machine-made tableware is engineered for uniformity. Traditional Japanese pottery is engineered for something closer to the opposite: each piece carries the trace of the hands and the fire that made it. That's the trade a handmade piece makes with you, and it's usually the reason you chose it over something from a factory line.
Crazing (kannyu, 貫入)
Look closely at the glaze on many Japanese ceramic pieces and you'll see a fine network of hairline cracks running through it — sometimes almost invisible, sometimes forming a visible spiderweb pattern. This is called kannyu in Japanese, or crazing in English, and it happens because the glaze and the clay body beneath it cool and contract at slightly different rates after firing. The glaze, being thinner and more brittle, develops tiny stress cracks as a result.
Crazing is cosmetic. It sits in the glaze layer only and does not compromise the strength of the piece. In fact, in styles like Hagi ware, potters deliberately use clay-and-glaze combinations that craze heavily, because the network of fine lines is considered part of the piece's beauty — it tends to deepen in color slightly with years of tea staining, a process some collectors specifically seek out.
Pinholes
Tiny pinprick-sized dots or craters in the glaze surface are called pinholes. They form when gas — usually released from organic material or trapped moisture in the clay — tries to escape through the glaze while it's still molten in the kiln. Most of the time the glaze heals over as it cools; sometimes a small pit is left behind. This is a normal outcome of high-temperature firing with natural materials, not a sign of poor construction.
Iron specks
Small dark or black specks scattered across a glazed surface, particularly on stoneware, usually come from naturally occurring iron content in the clay itself. When the piece is fired, that iron oxidizes and surfaces as a fleck. Many kilns don't filter their clay to remove every trace of iron, partly because doing so is impractical and partly because the specks are widely accepted — and in some traditions actively appreciated — as a mark of natural, minimally processed material.
Glaze pooling and unevenness (keshiki, 景色)
Where a glaze runs thicker in one area than another, or pools slightly at the base of a piece, you'll often see color deepen or shift — a milky glaze turning faintly blue where it's thickest, for example. This unevenness is called keshiki, literally "scenery," and it's one of the most prized qualities in Japanese ceramics rather than something potters try to eliminate. It happens because glaze is applied by hand — dipped, poured, or brushed — and gravity pulls it unevenly as the piece is fired standing upright.
Small differences in shape
If you compare two bowls from the same collection side by side, you may notice one is very slightly more oval than round, or that a rim sits a touch higher on one side. On wheel-thrown or hand-built pieces, this comes from the piece being shaped by a human hand rather than a mold, and from the clay itself moving slightly as it dries and fires. A difference of a millimeter or two in diameter, or a rim that isn't perfectly level, falls within what's normal for handmade work.
So when is something actually a defect?
None of the above should be used to explain away a genuine problem. Sharp cracks that go through the clay body itself (not just the glaze), chips on the rim or foot, glaze that has flaked off in patches, or a piece that wobbles badly on a flat surface are not natural characteristics — they're damage or manufacturing faults, and you should contact the seller about them. The difference, broadly, is that natural characteristics sit in the glaze or reflect minor variation in form, while defects compromise the structure or the surface has failed outright.
