This is noborigama — the climbing kiln that shaped Japanese pottery for five centuries. Built into hillsides at steep angles, these multi-chambered dragons of brick and fire don't just heat clay. The wood whispers its signature

Noborigama potters don't glaze everything. Many pieces enter naked, relying entirely on yōhen — the kiln's own mark-making. Wood ash becomes airborne at extreme temperatures, landing on shoulders and rims of pots, melting into natural glazes of amber, olive, and cream.

The kiln decides what survives and what becomes a lesson buried in the shard pile.

Too much oxygen and the atmosphere turns oxidizing, burning away iron. Starve the fire and you create reduction — a oxygen-hungry environment that pulls oxygen from the clay itself, darkening bodies and intensifying certain glazes.

The stoker's skill lies in knowing when to feed, when to wait, when to choke the air. Thermometers help, but the best potters read flame language — the hiss, the roar, the sudden quiet that signals a chamber reaching equilibrium.

When the final log goes in and the chimney is sealed, the kiln begins its slow exhale. Cooling takes as long as heating. Rush it, and thermal shock shatters weeks of work.

Most Japanese pottery studios abandoned noborigama decades ago. Gas and electric kilns offer control, efficiency, insurance approval. Yet a devoted lineage persists — potters who maintain these hillside beasts despite the labour, the fuel costs, the sleepless nights.

They do it for the unrepeatable. For the conversation between human intention and elemental chaos. A noborigama firing is less like manufacturing and more like negotiating with weather.
