Most of Japan's autumn icons ask you to stand still in a temple garden. Hakone asks you to keep moving. This hot-spring region in the mountains west of Tokyo strings its best colour along a famous transport loop — train, cable car, ropeway and boat — so a single day can carry you from a crater valley to a lakeshore torii to a field of silver grass.

When do Hakone's autumn leaves peak?

As with Nikkō, altitude sets the schedule. The higher ground colours first and the season slides downhill:

Late October to early November — Lake Ashi and the Owakudani crater, the highest points on the loop.
Mid-to-late November — Gōra and the lower slopes, including the garden temples and museums.

So Hakone's window runs roughly early to late November, a touch ahead of Kyoto. Warm autumns in recent years have tended to push the colour later, so check a forecast close to your trip.

Lake Ashi — water, torii and (sometimes) Fuji

The caldera lake is Hakone's centrepiece. Sightseeing boats cross it beneath wooded slopes, and on a clear day Mount Fuji rises behind the red lakeside torii of Hakone Shrine. The shore colours from around early November.

Owakudani — autumn over a volcano

Ride the Hakone Ropeway over Owakudani, a still-steaming volcanic valley, and the autumn hillsides unroll beneath your feet — a genuinely dramatic way to see the season from above. The colour reaches the valley from late October.

Gōra Park and the Hakone Museum of Art

Lower down in Gōra, the season turns gentler and more designed. Gōra Park frames maples around a fountain and greenhouses, while the nearby Hakone Museum of Art is famous for its moss garden glowing under red maples — one of the loveliest, and most photographed, autumn scenes in the region, peaking mid-to-late November.

Sengokuhara — a hillside of silver grass

For something other than maples, the Sengokuhara plateau fills with susuki, silver pampas grass that turns the slope pale gold and sends it rippling in the wind. It is at its best from mid-autumn — a soft, cinematic counterpoint to all the fiery red elsewhere.

Riding the loop

Getting there: the Odakyū "Romancecar" runs from Shinjuku in Tokyo to Hakone-Yumoto in around 85 minutes.
The loop: from Hakone-Yumoto, the Hakone Tozan Railway, cable car, ropeway, boat and buses connect into one circuit. The Hakone Free Pass covers them and saves fuss.
Go clockwise and early. The ropeway and boats queue at peak; a morning start keeps you ahead of the tour buses.
Build in a bath. This is hot-spring country — a soak among autumn trees is the whole point.

Hakone won't hand you a single perfect frame so much as a moving one: an afternoon of lake, steam, ropeway and grass that adds up to one of the easiest autumn escapes from Tokyo.
