You'd think lacquer dries like paint — exposed to air, moisture evaporates, surface hardens. But urushi, the sap used in Japanese lacquerware, works backward.
It cures in humidity. The enzyme laccase, naturally present in the sap, needs moisture and warmth to trigger a chemical reaction that transforms liquid resin into a glass-like shell. Too dry, and the process stalls. Too cold, and nothing happens. Craftsmen work in climate-controlled rooms, applying coat after coat — sometimes ten, fifteen, even thirty layers — waiting days or weeks between each one.
