How Underglaze Blue Painting Is Applied: The Art of Sometsuke

A single brushstroke—blue on white—can take a decade to master. And it must be painted blind.

The gamble of invisible color

When a craftsman paints gosu, the cobalt pigment used for sometsuke (underglaze blue decoration), onto raw porcelain, the color looks nothing like the final result. It appears dull gray, sometimes muddy brown, utterly unremarkable. Only after glazing and firing at over 1,300°C does the brilliant blue emerge—deep, clear, permanent.

This is the central tension of underglaze blue painting. You must see the finished color in your mind while your hand works with something that looks entirely different. Every brushstroke is an act of faith.

The painter cannot correct, cannot layer to darken, cannot erase. The raw clay body drinks the pigment instantly. Hesitation shows. So does overconfidence.

One brush, infinite pressure

Traditional sometsuke painters use a single brush—often dakuhitsu, a thick, round-tipped brush made from animal hair—to create every line, dot, and wash. The secret is not in changing tools. It's in pressure, angle, speed, and the amount of water mixed with the gosu.

Press hard and the line thickens, releasing more pigment. Lift to a whisper and the stroke fades to a fine thread. Tilt the brush and you can paint the edge of a petal. Twist it and suddenly you've rendered the texture of a pine needle.

A master can paint an entire landscape—mountain, mist, distant boat—using a single loaded brush, never lifting it to reload.

The pigment itself is unforgiving. Traditional gosu was made by grinding cobalt ore with water. Too thick and it clumps, creating dark blotches. Too thin and the blue fades to near-invisibility after firing. Painters learn the exact consistency by feel, the way a chef knows when dough is ready.

Painting on a curve

Flat paper is easy. A rounded bowl is not.

The painter must rotate the piece continuously, keeping the brush perpendicular to the surface while the hand follows a curve. It's a kind of three-dimensional calligraphy. One wobble, one moment where the rotation doesn't match the stroke, and the line breaks or wavers.

Some workshops use a slow-turning wheel. Others hold the piece in one hand, painting with the other, feeling the form as much as seeing it. For cylindrical sake bottles or teacups, the painter's hand must move in a smooth arc while the mind calculates how the pattern will meet itself on the other side.

The clay is leather-hard at this stage—dry enough to hold its shape, soft enough to still be fragile. Touch it too firmly and you'll dent it. Breathe moisture onto it and the pigment may bleed.

What the fire reveals

After painting, the piece is dipped in or sprayed with a transparent glaze—usually feldspar and limestone. The glaze coats the blue design, sealing it beneath a glassy surface. Then comes the kiln.

As temperature climbs, the cobalt oxide in the gosu transforms. Impurities burn away. The color intensifies. What looked gray becomes azure, navy, or the pale sky-blue called asagi. The glaze melts into glass, locking the painting permanently into the surface—not on it, but in it, protected and luminous.

This is why sometsuke survives centuries. The blue is not decoration applied afterward. It's part of the fabric of the object itself.

And the painter, who worked blind, finally sees what their hand believed into being.
