Nagano's Alpine Autumn: Kamikochi and Karuizawa, Where the Season Starts Early

Up in the Japanese Alps, autumn keeps its own calendar. While the cities wait for late November, the high valleys of Nagano have already turned — which makes the prefecture the place to go if you want the season early, set against real mountains rather than temple walls. Its two great autumn faces are the alpine sanctuary of Kamikōchi and the cool resort town of Karuizawa, and between them they cover most of October.

When do Nagano's autumn leaves peak?

Altitude rules everything here, so the colour comes down the mountains over more than a month:

Late September to early October — the highest ground, such as the Karasawa Cirque and Shiga Kōgen, above 2,000 metres.
Mid-to-late October — the floor of the Kamikōchi valley, around 1,500 metres, at its classic peak.
Late October to early November — the lower resort country around Karuizawa.

Kamikōchi — a mirror valley in the Alps

Kamikōchi is a protected highland valley strung along the clear Azusa River, ringed by the jagged Hotaka peaks and the volcano of Yake-dake. Flat, well-made walking paths link its famous set pieces: the Kappa Bridge at the heart of the valley, and above all Taishō Pond, whose still morning water mirrors the peaks and the golden trees in a single frame — one of the most photographed autumn scenes in Japan. It is easy walking in dramatic scenery, best in mid-to-late October. Note that Kamikōchi is closed to private cars: you reach it by bus or taxi, which keeps the valley calm.

Karuizawa — resort autumn, an easy reach from Tokyo

Cooler and gentler, Karuizawa is a leafy highland resort that turns from late October into early November. Its highlights are soft and strollable: the reflective Kumoba Pond (nicknamed 'Swan Lake') ringed by fiery trees, the delicate Shiraito Falls, and quiet forest paths made for cycling. Best of all, it sits right on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, barely an hour from Tokyo — the simplest alpine autumn day trip in the country.

How to do it

To Kamikōchi: the usual route is via Matsumoto, then train and bus (or a direct seasonal bus) to the valley. Remember private cars are barred — plan on the bus.
To Karuizawa: direct on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo, about an hour; everything is walkable or a short cycle from the station.
Come early in the season. Nagano peaks in October — weeks before the cities — so this is where to head if you are travelling early autumn.
Dress for the mountains. October mornings at altitude are genuinely cold, and Kamikōchi's season is short; layers make the mirror-pond dawns bearable.
