Why Japanese Temples Use No Nails in Their Frames
A temple rises without a single nail.
Wood slides into wood. Mortise meets tenon. The joints lock like three-dimensional puzzles, tightening as the timber ages and settles. No metal. No screws. Just precision geometry passed through generations of carpenters who learned to read grain the way sailors read water.
The frame breathes. In summer humidity, the wood swells. In winter cold, it contracts. The building moves — imperceptibly, constantly — adapting to the air around it. Metal would fight this. Metal would crack the wood, rust, weaken. But wood against wood flexes, holds, endures.
Then the earthquake comes. The ground rolls. And instead of shattering, the temple sways. The joints absorb the shock, distributing force through the entire skeleton. Some temples have stood for over a thousand years this way, surviving quakes that leveled concrete around them.
This is kanawa-tsugi, kama-tsugi, ari-kake — a vocabulary of joinery so refined that entire buildings become a single, breathing organism. The knowledge lives in the hands of miyadaiku, temple carpenters who spend decades mastering cuts measured in fractions of millimeters.
